Never too late to learn. Thurso, 1922.

Thurso, 1922 — Learning to Read Late. Donald MacKay always felt a step behind in school and dropped out early to work. In his thirties he decided he was tired of pretending to read letters he couldn’t, and he signed up for evening classes. His wife made him strong tea, stirred with their 1910 apostle spoon, before every lesson. The first time he managed a paragraph out loud, he swore the tea tasted sweeter. He started reading the paper on Sundays, then books, then anything he could get his hands on. Now made into a ring, the spoon honours the season where he proved to himself it’s never too late to learn something new.
